2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Owner's Manual
The fourth-generation Silverado was designed from the ground up. During the work on the pickup truck, the largest customer survey in the history of the brand was conducted – 7,000 people were asked what they wished for the new generation of Silverado. The appearance of the car has changed, but remained familiar. In the front, as before, massive radiator grills, in the back, the Chevrolet inscription is stamped again – these were on the brand’s classic pickups. The manufacturer emphasized reducing the weight of the car, but did not go the way of Ford with aluminum body panels. Instead, they decided to reduce the weight of Silverado due to the use of high-strength steel. In particular, the floor of the cargo platform is made of it. The presentation of the new model was dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Chevrolet pickups. The sale started in August 2018. The base Silverado 1500 will offer a wide variety of gasoline and diesel engines: from a 2.7-liter inline “turbo four” to a 6.2-liter V8. 6.6-liter V8 engines are provided for the “heavy” 2500HD/3500HD series.
In the new generation, the design of the Chevrolet Silverado has become fundamentally different. If all previous generations of this pickup had a deliberately simple and brutal look, then the new one has an interesting and complex style with carefully worked out details that are interesting to look at. New configurations have been announced, such as the Trail Boss – this Silverado is a pickup with a set of options from the off-road modification of the Z71 plus a factory lift kit, tested and certified by the manufacturer. In the Trail Boss configuration, the electric drive of the rear folding board is installed as standard. It can be controlled from the cabin or from a key fob. The model range also includes a new sports version of Silverado, which will receive the RST prefix. Depending on the equipment, the Silverado will offer heated bucket seats, a heated steering wheel, an infotainment system with voice recognition and an 8-inch screen, dual-zone climate control, and a Bose premium audio system.
The engine lineup of the new Chevrolet Silverado 1500 consists of gasoline V8s with a volume of 5.3 liters (355 hp, 383 Nm) and 6.2 liters (420 hp, 624 Nm), as well as a 4.3-liter V6 gasoline engine (285 hp, 414 Nm), which, in fact, opens the model range and is offered in the basic version of the WT (Work Truck – a typical “work horse”). But the most unusual offer was a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine with direct injection and a turbocharger with a double “snail”. In terms of performance, it surpasses the basic version of the 4.3 V6, producing 310 forces and 472 Nm. Since the 2020 model year, a six-cylinder Duramax turbodiesel with a volume of 3.0 liters has also appeared in the range, which is interesting for its in-line arrangement of cylinders. Compared to V8 engines, it has a deliberately more moderate appetite, but at the same time it has good performance (277 hp, 624 Nm). By the way, all Silverados are equipped with a start-stop system and the function of turning off part of the cylinders. For example, according to the manufacturer, V8 engines work exactly like a V8 less than 40% of the time. Depending on the engine, the Silverado’s automatic transmission can be 6-, 8-, or 10-speed. Rear or all-wheel drive.
Silverado has an independent front suspension and a dependent rear suspension with springs (in some modifications, composite sheets are added). As already mentioned, when developing the new Silverado, GM specialists did not stay away from the general trend of “shedding excess weight”. With the change of generations, the Chevrolet pickup immediately lost 200 kg of curb weight (2029-2272 kg). The cargo platform in the new generation has become 18 cm wider – this allowed to increase its volume in the basic modification from 1512 to 1784 liters. As always, buyers are offered several options for the length of the platform and many functional devices such as lockable boxes for tools installed above the rear arches.
Increased attention to safety requires adding numerous intelligent assistants to the standard set of Chevrolet Silverado systems. So, for example, a package is offered for all trim levels except the base WT, which includes a lane departure warning system, blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic warning, front and rear parking sensors. Another package is available only for the top versions of the LTZ and High Country and includes adaptive cruise control and a preventive safety system with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, automatic high beam, lane keeping assistance. A digital mirror with a rear-view camera, an all-round view system, and a projection display are available for an additional fee.
The Silverado remains one of the company’s most popular models, and the full-size pickup class it belongs to is actually recognized as an American automotive icon, and the competition here is very high. In the new generation, Silverado has a more spacious and comfortable cabin than its predecessor, an incredibly rich assortment of power units, transmission options and body configurations – for various tasks.
